💼 About Me

When I was in the 7th grade, I read “All Around the Town” by Mary Higgins Clark. After this book, I was intensely interested in how the mind works, and how this impacts mental health. When I attended Virginia State University, I was educated on the field of psychology, and received my Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology in 2002. I was told by the department head, Dr. Florence S. Farley, that she would always champion the psychology department to be included within the School of Sciences - as she felt that the study of human behavior and psychology was a science, and should always be explored in that way.

I took my scientific background in human behavior and psychology, along with my Bachelor’s of Science, and moved to Canton, OH in 2005. My experience and exposure within the realm of mental health continued to be nurtured through many positions at the community level.

After teaching in preschools, I provided early childhood mental health consultation to Head Start programs, and private preschools under the direction of Dr. Susan Lowery O’Connell at Community Services of Stark County (now CommQuest Services). After obtaining my Master’s of Art in Counseling and Human Development at Walsh University in 2011, under the chair directorship of Dr. Linda Barclay, I began to provide outpatient therapy for CommQuest (formerly Community Services of Stark County), and secured certification as an Adoption Assessor (Tier 1).

While in the Counseling and Human Development master’s program, I was fortunate to travel to Kampala & Gulu, Uganda, Africa in 2010. After arriving in, and traveling from Kampala, Uganda, I arrived in Gulu, Uganda, which is in the northern part of Uganda, near the border of Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The focus in this African country and region, was to teach lay persons (nurses, religious figures, community leaders, teachers, etc.) how to support a person returning from the war that Joseph Kony started. This cultural immersion provided me with the knowledge that perceptions, beliefs, and experiences had a universal theme, among oppressed minorities, and the young & vulnerable.

In 2014, I returned to Petersburg, VA, and secured a position as a Clinical Director for a mental health skill building agency. While gaining knowledge of Virginia’s mental health system, learning about resources, and the distribution of mental health support, I assisted in helping this agency to develop standards of operations, building a quality assurance team, and developing trainings for new and current mental health skill builders. In 2018, I supported this agency in establishing a mental health counseling group practice, and secured Residents in Counseling to provide therapy and treatment. During this time, I honed my skills as on online therapist through an online counseling platform part time, as my passion has always been in direct client care versus employee management. I felt most fulfilled and satisfied when directly providing mental health treatment & therapy.
